Achill - Kildownet Cemetary - On 14 June 1894, 32 of 110 islanders on board a hooker drowned when the boat capsized while, unwisely, attempting a sharp turn outside Westport Harbour. Their bodies were carried by train on the Westport to Achill line which opened that year. The drowned had been on their way to Scotland. Traditionally people from Achill travelled to Scotland for seasonal work picking potatoes (tattie howking). They usually travelled in groups based on family and locality.
