Achill - Kildownet Cemetary - 10 "tattie howkers" or potato pickers, all from Achill, lost their lives in a fire at a bothy where they were sleeping in the early hours of Thursday, 16th September 1937 at No 67, Eastside, Kirkintolloch, Scotland. The cause of the fire has never been explained. Their bodies were carried by train on the Westport to Achill line which closed that year. Traditionally people from Achill travelled to Scotland for seasonal work picking potatoes. They usually travelled in groups based on family and locality.
